Holy Week (Before and Now)
Back in the 1990s, our religious community was being founded in the PH. To our surprise, during one Holy Week, our Dutch master of scholastics, who was pressed with other work & Masses to celebrate, delegated a retreat obligation to me and my co-seminarian. He told us: "Give the talks and the prayer sessions, and I will just arrive to celebrate the Eucharist."

My companion and I knew how difficult Holy Week was since it involved a lot of work. The difficulty was this: we had to work with a few "personnel" in the community, and there was little time to prepare! And we knew this well because our Italian novice master grounded us in the realities of work during the Holy Week.

But the hard work and the mission our superior gave us was worth it. We only had to explain the situation to our retreatants.

We did our best. My co-seminarian had a very good and strong tenor voice, and I seconded with my non-pro pluck-pick-strum guitar technique. We shared the teachings and books of our French founder through talks, handouts, audio-visuals, and songs to inspire them with.

When we reported back to our Dutch formator and gave him the envelope of the cash we worked for, he was surprised and smiled.

What we learned from that retreat work was this: if you give your very best, introduce creativity and innovation, without thinking of the money you can earn, God will surprise you!

This is a wise lesson for MSMEs who have a sense of mission in their business operations. These times of crisis really call for that. Applying human talent plus AI apps can give you the creative and innovative edge to harness that profitable energy before and after any Holy Week obligations.

Giving your best in any enterprise
Making a rough analogy, this giving of your best for others is like practicing Google's people-first SEO principle in your content strategy. It can also be translated to adopting a wise "customer is always right" attitude in your business strategy (with respect to your profit intent).

Now that the non-working holiday season has passed, you can reflect on what has just passed. What did you do with the time given to you? Did you also think of any people-first content ideas to work on? How about your "suki"? Have you thought of any creative or innovative non-expense ideas to retain them? If you did, then you are in for a post-holiday re-opening sprint!

MSME Reopening, Compliance, and Planning Roadmap

How to reactivate cash cycles immediately
For some MSMEs opening early, it is important to work early morning to withdraw additional replenishment cash from your nearest bank branch by 8:00 AM. News reports online that major banks like BPI, BDO, and Metrobank are closed from April 2 to April 4. This makes early cash withdrawals vital for a planned Saturday reset for MSMEs opening early.

It is vital not to waste small bills and coins if there is already cash-on-hand during pre-Holy Week business operations. Pre-count denominations and let your cashier organize them well for seamless transactions with customers. Have them recharge all your handheld and mobile POS machines that are all-in-one, ready for any e-wallet, debit, or credit card transactions. If it also accepts contactless payments, this is an efficient means to speed up a line of customers.

MSMEs who maintain their digital cash flow systems together with physical cash reopen and reactivate faster.
How to prioritize high-turnover inventory
You can front-load your display with your top 20% highest-margin, fastest-moving products (such as bread and chicken eggs for food MSMEs). Some hard-working and diligent Filipino employees employed by Catholic Filipino-Chinese business owners return from the provinces to the NCR and begin to work as early as Holy Saturday. In a article from Contactpigeon.com, food and beverages have the highest spending potential, more than $5 billion every Easter Sunday.

If your MSME is into retailing food, prioritize bread and chicken eggs. Remind your staff not to open the store if your supply of eggs is still in cartons and tied up in a bundle. Prepare them early because early customers prioritize this high-value and saleable food product.

Remember, many Filipinos buy bread and chicken eggs fast. If your MSME in Kapitolyo, Pasig, Greenfield District Mandaluyong, or Quezon City's business areas, sell these food items and they are not ready, customers will go to the next MSME who is already ready with their fresh stock of bread/chicken eggs.

Extra tip: Allocate 25% of Holy Saturday sales for fuel price surge on , 6:00 AM PHT.
How to settle urgent payables, including BIR compliance
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has already sent notices in its many communication channels to remind taxpayers of the April 15 annual income tax compliance. The April 15 annual income tax filing deadline leaves only 11 days (or 7 working days) from , Holy Saturday reopening.

April 5 is a Sunday, April 6 Monday, April 7 Tuesday, April 8 Wednesday ... then April 9 holiday ... leaving April 10, 13, and 14 as your final three working days before the April 15 deadline.

File the BIR Form via eBIRForms as early as your MSME can. The , Araw ng Kagitingan compresses the compliance period. Delegate a member of staff to work on it.

For supplies, settle supplier payables in batches if possible. Settle it digitally with GCash or Maya.
How to handle early customer influx gracefully
Remind your loyal staff to smile, move fast, and keep lines short. Don't forget to reward them with their holiday pay, as the Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE) guidelines for Holy Week advise.

For MSMEs with convenience stores, don't open when you have only one cashier available. Wait for the other cashier-employee to show up. Otherwise, diligent and industrious working Filipinos who go out early to buy the food they need for work on Holy Saturday will again move on to the next MSME with fewer lines. Lines can already form on Holy Saturday, especially for MSMEs retailing basic food items.

Remember, every seamless transaction on reopening day rebuilds suki trust. It can convert new walk-ins into repeat customers before competitors fully reopen on Monday.

Don't waste opportunities to reopen strong, reset cashflow, & rebuild suki relations post-Holy Week.

Don't forget, smiles matter. Business is also about people and kindness. And all people appreciate good service; it gives them "new life".

And in these times of crisis, good service still matter even though they may not appear relaxed, perfect, or sincere ("dahil mahirap ang buhay at panahon ngayon").

We hope all understand, that we are called not to judge the present, without faith in a profitable outcome.

How Proactive NCR MSMEs Can Stay Cash-Ready During Brownouts

1. Energy Emergency 2. Digital Infra Risk 3. Physical Cash Protocol 4. Manual Backup 5. Settlement (Post-Event)
Phase 1: Awareness - Recognition of fuel hikes and grid fragility (Red/Orange).
Phase 2: Action - Shifting to cash/manual systems to ensure continuous "suki" service (Green/Blue).

Strategically designed for Philippine MSME resilience during the 2026 Energy Crisis.

When the President declared a national energy emergency last , and additional energy supplies were procured to last till May to , it produced a new lifeline. With no certainty yet to the end of the conflict in the Middle East, Filipino MSMEs can continue readjusting their 4-day workflow, build B2B MSME networks, and reallocate well their existing working capital while the fuel supply is stable.

However, since these three proactive measures, including the hedging of fuel, FX, and supply chain risks, require online digital tools and fintech integration, a brownout scenario can block operations. It can be easily fixed with the use of a mini-UPS (uninterrupted power supply) designed for WiFi routers and modems. This is good for 4-8 hours. For longer brownout hours, a portable solar power station can be used for refrigeration or lighting.

The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) forecasted an adequate power supply till June 2026, but warns that the country has fragile reserves and looming grid alerts. Similarly, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines is concerned about "peak demand".

Consider this scenario. Summer is here. If the conflict in the Middle East is protracted, more brownouts (scheduled or unscheduled) are possible. These can knock out ATMs, GCash, and Maya simultaneously for more than a day. Pre-Middle East crisis business strategies become unexecutable. But prompting AI for new solutions can bring bright ideas.

A brownout-ready cash and settlement contingency before the lights go out is one idea. And making it a standard operating response is key.

Read the other suggested ideas given below and get ready to act now.
This infographic explains how PH MSMEs in NCR can stay cash-ready during brownouts

2026 Stay Cash-Ready: The MSME Brownout Contingency Guide

Build a Brownout Cash Protocol Before Lights Go Out
We do not need to wait before things go out of hand. It has happened in other parts of the world already. The Philippine government has already taken proactive measures to address the situation from a national perspective. However, MSMEs can be quality action-takers and apply their own proactive measures. They will not overburden a government already working to contain a large crisis.

So, what proactive measures can quality action-taking MSMEs make?

First, each MSME can answer this most urgent question: How much physical cash should I keep and in what denominations for daily MSME transactions?

Here are a few practical ideas:
  • Establish a predetermined cash-on-hand threshold (base this on the number of your "suki" and add extra for other customers who will transfer to your MSME when others are unable to deliver products/services)
  • For the denomination breakdown, here are ideas: use Php 1,000 for large-value suki, Php 500 and Php 100 bills for mid-value suki transactions, and Php 50 bills, Php 20 bills/coins, etc. for smaller change-dependent sales.
  • Make a well-laid-out and detailed plan for how to replenish that cash-on-hand within the first two hours of power restoration. Designate one staff member to withdraw the replenishment amount from the nearest bank branch. Do not wait for familiar ATMs to go online.
  • Train staff very well with an efficient physical receipt backup system when the power goes out on mobile e-wallets.
  • Assign a staff member for risk control: theft, leakage, or misallocation of physical cash. This can be done when designated staff members handle manual sales log records and internal cash audits. Discipline helps staff resist external chaos from breaching security to internal MSME operations.
  • Create a clear system of financial settlements. Re-train staff on pre-printed manual sales invoice slips with carbon copy for suki transactions, and a scheduled GCash/Maya batch settlement within 30 minutes of power restoration. This clears all pending brownout-period transactions.
  • Evaluate how transaction systems fared, iron it out for more seamless transactions, and be ready again for the next brownout so that your MSMEs' financial operations don't freeze when the digital infrastructure goes dark again.
How to Keep Suki Trust Intact When Online Payments Go Dark
Before a brownout hits, send a short, warm Viber or WhatsApp broadcast to your suki community explaining your brownout payment contingency system, clearly stating, (example ideas):
  • "Kung walang kuryente, tumatanggap kami ng cash"
  • "Huwag mag-alala — may invoice kaming laging handa para sa inyo"
  • Prepare message templates and update them as necessary
  • Make proactive messages to all suki in all your communication channels; no suki left behind. Keep them as happy as possible.
  • Make your messages feel reliable to your suki by delivering products/services ASAP (no unrealistic promises)
  • Make your message permanent by placing a sign at your physical store, include it in your manual invoices, and let staff finish off with a "smile" because every suki or new customer matters

Proactively train your staff with a weekly 10-minute dry run of a manual invoices protocol to deliver a smooth offline experience
  • Practicing protocols will produce seamless transactions between staff and suki; this avoids negative emotional energy that can make transactions error-prone
  • Make system of carbon-copying invoice slips especially seamless and more accurate to keep suki from waiting too long (especially when a line has been formed)
  • Instill a growth mindset (learning from new sales experiences) into your staff: Make every new, unprecedented pain point of the moment an opportunity to build trust between the MSME and the suki or new customer
  • A job well done for a new B2B/B2C during brownouts converts them into a suki and an ally

For your loyal B2B suppliers and partners, establish a flexible, more or less, 24–48 hour grace period for digital settlement after power restoration (to avoid losing revenue or goodwill). Communicate this in writing (through formal email messages) or messaging via your B2B Viber/WhatsApp channel before any scheduled brownout occurs. Pair this with a concrete action step to prioritize the settlement ASAP (when GCash and Maya come back online).

Suppliers who feel respected and prioritized during disruptions become your most reliable partners.

The abovementioned action steps maintain customer and supplier trust when your MSME's digital payment systems suddenly become unavailable. In every new situation, it is necessary for all staff to understand what is under their control and what is not. This avoids any friction or conflict in the business transaction.

Trust is built on predictability, transparency, and continuity. When MSMEs communicate early and clearly, execute smoothly, and honor suki B2B relationships, they don’t just survive brownouts. They convert dependability into repeat sales/revenue and stronger social media network effects at Facebook or LinkedIn.

How to Build NCR B2B MSME Networks for Fuel-Resilient Supply

Published at 5:00 PM PHT,
by

Why Networking Among MSMEs within Your Neighborhood Matters

1 Record Fuel Prices → 2 Regular B2B Network Assessments → 3 Apply Workable Shared Logistics (Co-loading) → 4 Integrate More Digital Settlements → 5 Evaluate Collaborative Profit Buffer

Do you remember the early 1990s? It was a time when computers were just emerging into the Philippine business sector. But it was also a time of many severe, rotating "brownouts".

I remember visiting an MSME owner who employed working students. The frustration was evident for both owner and workers every time the power vanished without notice. Since it was without notice, hours of work were unsaved on floppy disks. The word-of-the-day of those brownout days was always a frustrated "Sayang!" in varied Tagalog expressions.

Now, we fast-forward to , and a different kind of "brownout" threatens. It is a threat caused by the highest fuel price jump in Philippine history. This time, God-fearing MSMEs hope that "history does not repeat itself". With more public-private partnerships working for renewable energy sources, there are greater chances it won't. Also, according to GMAnetwork.com, , 12:15 a.m., Energy Secretary Sharon Garin is assuring the public that the country has sufficient fuel reserves to last up to 50 days.

So, what has to be done now?

In a previous strategy, we discussed MSME sustainability by employing AI tools to monitor the BSP's rate moves and the USD:PHP FX rate to make informed capital decisions. Though not perfect, AI responses still have a high accuracy for detailed analyses to help MSMEs make AI-informed decisions and invest in "abot-kaya", budget-friendly
  • solar water heaters,
  • electric delivery vehicles,
  • induction cookers,
  • inverter-type refrigerators, and
  • led lighting with motion sensors.
All these items can hedge against record-breaking fuel price spikes. However, MSMEs cannot be resilient on their own now. With diesel projected to jump by as much as Php 11.88 to Php 14.50 per liter, gasoline to increase by Php 6.47 to Php 7.50 per liter, and kerosene to rise Php 13.66 liter on (cf. MB.com.ph, ABS-CBN.com), the wisest step now is to adopt B2B MSME networking to stabilize the management of logistics needs and work so that MSMEs can obtain sustainable profit.

Co-Loading & Profit: Shared NCR Logistics for B2B Resilience
MSMEs must move beyond isolated logistics operations to one that is collaborative. Industry data shows that 56% of trucks delivering consumer goods operate at only 32% to 40% capacity. This underutilization is a cost to your business. Also, relying on smaller vehicles like AUVs can cost 61% more than utilizing six-wheeler trucks shared by several MSMEs.

Aside from sticking to one cost-efficient delivery run, MSMEs can search for additional routes that are even shorter (search for more traffic-legal shortcuts) to reduce fuel-dependent distances to a minimum. Regularly searching and studying routes can hedge well against rising oil prices.

Another practical idea is for neighboring MSMEs to designate a common drop-off hub, such as a co-MSME that can offer storage space rental. Deliveries would then be consolidated into one trip to that storage hub, then the MSMEs who collaborated for that hub can get their stock by tricycle/foot work, an electronic vehicle, or any form of short-distance transport. This reduces repeated fuel-heavy routes while maintaining fulfillment of orders. Over time, this common storage system can evolve into a micro-distribution network that sustains reliability at lower costs in business operations.

For NCR MSMEs within the same barangay, which are often close-knit, such as in Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig, they can manage the trust levels among themselves and formalize a group that has common suppliers: for cooking gas, drinking water, or basic needs such as eggs, bigas (rice), and bread. A sari-sari store, a carinderia, a fresh vegetables store, and a small retailer within walking distance from one another, and who do not compete with one another, can share the abovementioned common supplier categories. They can use AI tools to map out their common inventory needs. The AI system can then present a workable arrangement of orders within a chosen timeframe that consolidates their immediate supply needs. This AI-arranged system can reduce per-unit delivery surcharge, and the fuel cost is split across a bigger order value, with each MSME absorbing only a fraction of what they would have paid individually.
Digitize B2B Settlements to Slash Fuel-Linked Vendor Trips
The varied "Friday realities" of the 4-day workweek can make physical coordination with customers, the staff of MSMEs' branches, and suppliers, a liability. But in the AI era, this is exactly the time to focus on greater digitalization of workflows and using local fintech integration (GCash & Maya) to automate B2B invoicing and settlements.

By shifting coordination to digital channels and AI-mediated workflows (like Shopee AI), MSMEs eliminate trips to supplier offices or to their branches that may be closed or WFH-only on Fridays. With digitalized workflows, revenue flows autonomously even on "Day Five" of the 4-day workweek.

MSMEs can also let go, at this time, of any trips to pay suppliers physically. Choose other suppliers who print their GCash/Maya QR codes on invoices. As your staff scans their invoice and pays through GCash or Maya, they receive the supplies of the business in just one transaction. Furthermore, transactions of supplies can be made in bigger batches to save not only on fuel but also on energy and time.

One last tip: Leverage whatever price freezes the government will soon implement. Take advantage of any 30-60 day price stability major manufacturers have committed to follow and schedule your collaborative bulk purchases before the price freeze expires.

How to Redesign Your MSME Workflows for a 4-Day Week Economy

Published at 5:00 PM PHT,
by

Why AI integration in Your NCR MSME workflows matters now

1Macro Risks (Global Fuel Policy) → 2Audit Workflow for Redesign → 3Clear Decision & Roles → 4AI Integration in Workflow → 5Sustainable 4-Day Revenue

Business, like life, has never been perfect. And economic history confirms this across every generation and crisis. Ideals help guide progress and humanize it. But to progress at present and to aim for business vision demands strategies that work on what MSMEs can control. Today, for a Philippine economy facing fuel hikes and a 4-day work week, that now includes the responsible and ethical use of AI to redesign how MSME workflows get done to sustain revenue. And to sustain revenue, economic progress with resilience is a decision to continue.

A Philippine Information Agency and a Facebook post report that another fuel price increase is expected this week on . Diesel is projected to climb by Php 19.30 to Php 22.30 per liter, and gasoline by Php 14 to Php 17 with no relief in sight. The Department of Energy has described this as the highest fuel price jump in the country's history.

The shift toward a four-day workweek in some institutions has already begun. A growth mindset certainly influences Philippine MSMEs to rethink how work, sales, and customer service are organized. Rethinking saves MSMEs from succumbing to decisions and moves influenced by panic.

But a question for MSME owners/workforce now is urgent: if work hours are rearranged, how should workflows be redesigned with AI for sustainability?
What does the 4-Day Workweek mean now
When the Philippine president declared last , for a 4-day work week applied to select executive offices, this doesn't mean an arrangement that applies to all. And surely, not simply working less. In practice, the concerned agencies may implement flexible work arrangements:
  • a compressed four-day schedule with longer hours,
  • a four-day onsite workweek with one work-from-home day,
  • or rotating onsite teams to keep services running all week.

In detail, government agencies adapt:
  • some extend hours to 10 hours per day for 4 days with 1 day off
  • others do standard 8-hour work onsite for four days with one day WFH
  • essential services, like PhilHealth's frontline and hospital-based services (and police, fire services, emergency response, certain courts, and frontline government services), will continue normal operations

NCR MSMEs transacting with government offices (like permits, clearances, PhilHealth contributions, SSS filings) now face three different Friday realities depending on which government agency they need to work with. Without understanding these varied work arrangements, an MSME owner/manager/employee could arrive at a government window on Friday expecting service and find it closed, WFH-only, or partially staffed. (Gathering info with AI tools is key now).

What is the implication? Given all these new work arrangements, NCR MSMEs need to digitize their government transactions, because the new 4-day cycle will make unplanned, uninformed walk-in government transactions an unnecessary expense ("sayang!"). Now is the time to really shift toward more digital coordination, fewer physical meetings, and greater reliance on automated workflows.

Each MSME can synchronize with the flexible work arrangement of the government with redesigned workflows that integrate more remote digital tasks, or hybrid arrangements (onsite/WFH/remote) to slash fuel and electricity expenses amid volatile gasoline and diesel price surges.

There is no reason to be reactive and to panic because fuel retailers have agreed to spread their price hikes (a staggered approach) over several days. And some stations will implement smaller daily increases of Php 2.50/liter. This is a staggered approach intended to soften the shock, but with a significant cumulative effect (cf. GMA News Online). But MSME staff need to monitor fuel price adjustments as part of a regular work rhythm built into their flexible and redesigned workflow.
Reduce Fuel-Linked Tasks Through Digital Operations
News online also report that public transport operators and delivery services are expected to pass on higher costs to commuters and customers. This inflationary pressure can ripple through food and essential goods. What can be done?

For your storefront & sales design:
  • Sell in bundles (in 2s, 3s, or sets of items) at discounted rates to increase revenue per delivery trip and help customers/clients create an extra stock of what they need at less cost
  • Set a minimum order value to qualify for a delivery service and push smaller orders toward pickup by customers en route from home to work or work to home
  • Offer digital product variants alongside physical ones. Create downloadable guides, e-consultations, or digital vouchers
  • Create a "Click and collect" option in your digital storefront for NCR customers near your location to eliminate delivery on days when fuel prices rise
Prioritize High-Return Workflows in a Shorter Workweek
  • Audit all tasks in workflow operations, then lessen low-value administrative tasks (such as onsite management-workforce pep talks) to free 20% of time for higher value operational tasks
  • For those using the Facebook or TikTok platform, plan, schedule, and post by batches only, from Mondays to Thursdays, for automatic engagement of readers on Fridays
  • For those at Shopee, use AI tools to schedule listings during the 4-day shifts in work and reserve Fridays for planning listings for next week.
  • For those with physical storefronts, train staff to focus on products with high-margin sales by arranging them in easy-to-see displays that attract attention, interest, and spark necessary impulse-buying. List these products for cost-effective restocking.
  • Make staff feel they are also part of your business; otherwise, the staff will focus only on their "sweldo" rather than the "suki". You and I know by experience that this employee attitude "kills the business" - "dahil madadala ang customer!"
AI Tools That Keep MSME Revenue Flowing on Day Five
  • Use the free ChatGPT web interface (chat.openai.com) to generate responses by batch for Facebook customer inquiries, then schedule them to post automatically on Friday in a 4-day workweek.
  • For those with a TikTok platform, use Canva AI to produce reels, and create a batch of reels on Thursdays for Friday's posts.
  • Avail of a Shopee account. Shopee's Shop AI Assistant is available to selected sellers. It can automatically handle buyer queries on product availability and order status, reducing the manual chat burden on MSME owners during a non-working day. This makes your MSME revenue opportunity flow on Friday.
  • Try Zapier. They can auto-sync Facebook orders into your dispatch workflow. Then your lead employee can log orders, alert the team, and update inventory records. This makes physical fulfillment decisions faster and better organized. The staff can notify "suki" that orders on Fridays will be sent on Monday of the following week.
  • Explore new possibilities with AI. Watch for the BSP's next rate announcement after the cut. Keep allocating capital wisely to sustain revenue. And monitor the big three: fuel prices, USD:PHP exchange rate, and supply chain changes for more informed decisions and frugal moves.
