Our Family Business Story
Our parents were born just 4-6 years after the Great Depression that resulted from the stock market crash of A.D. They spent the early part of their childhood in Taal, and Sto. Tomas, Batangas, a few years before Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was bombed in A.D.
They have withstood the challenges of wartime, which have become the historical and cultural contexts by which they valued conservatism, practicality, simplicity, and self-sufficiency in their work and life.
They brought those time-tested ethics not only in the extended family life of the Filipinos, but also in all relationships connected with the small businesses they began and managed very well.
These values are classic. And they are significant and relevant for a time such as now.
What do these four values mean?
- Conservatism: preservation, moderation, durability
- Practicality: usefulness, applicable, workable
- Simplicity: plainness, easy to do, solutions-directed
- Self-sufficiency: independence, resourcefulness, DIY
Many would gather all these values under the concept of minimalism. But our parents and their businesses have their own "brand" of minimalism.
The Seed that produced Rosauro's Legacy Archive
In 1986 A.D., our father Rosauro was preparing for his technical retirement from employment in A.D. He invested in a desktop computer with a book on Lotus 1-2-3. He gave the book to me and said: "Takeng, pag-aralan mo 'yan at tulungan mo ako sa negosyo." At that time, I just resigned from my job as a high-salaried economic researcher to pursue higher studies. Also, my sister was searching for a better-paying job with more benefits, and our youngest brother was still in grade 6, but was aiming to be accelerated and be exempted from grade 7. I did what my father instructed me to do. And the rest is family business history. The business took off as a microfinancing service, providing credit access to my father's friends, relatives, and co-employees - servicing his own generation - the Silent Generation - and my own generation as well as my sister's - the Baby Boomer generation. That business helped our family thrive and profit in politically and economically unstable times.
From that simple business venture with a small PC running on DOS and using Lotus 1-2-3 software, our family continued the classic values which our father and our mother instilled in us till 2020 A.D up to the present time. We continued to be conservative and practical. This is necessary for business during hard times. Add simplicity and self-sufficiency to the business and it profits for both the short-term and the long-term.
