An AI Productivity Boost: Insights & Tools for Polywork/MSME

Our Family Business Story

Our parents were born just 4-6 years after the Great Depression that resulted from the stock market crash of A.D. Our father Rosauro spent his early education at Rizal College of Taal (RCTaal), and our mother, Virginia, spent the early part of her education in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. These were a few years before Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was bombed in A.D.

They have withstood the challenges of wartime, which have become the historical contexts by which they valued conservatism, practicality, simplicity, and self-sufficiency throughout their work and life.

They brought those time-tested values into the extended family subculture of the Filipinos, especially in all small business ("MSME") relationships they began and managed very well.

These values are classical. And they are still significant and relevant for a time such as now.

What do these four values mean?

  • Conservatism: preservation, moderation, durability
  • Practicality: usefulness, applicable, workable
  • Simplicity: plainness, easy to do, solutions-directed
  • Self-sufficiency: independence, resourcefulness, DIY

Many would gather all these values under the concept of minimalism. But our parents and their businesses have their own "brand" of minimalism. Philippine MSMEs, professional polyworkers engaged in digital marketing, and consumers of laptop/mobile accessories would be wise to take up minimalism during a recession or an economic downturn; minimalism is a great system to manage work and life well until the local economy recovers. With minimalism as a Philippine MSME and professional polywork strategy, you can be proactive, plan ahead, and shift quickly in any changing political, economic, and social environment.

The "MSME" that produced Rosauro's Legacy Archive

In A.D., our father Rosauro was preparing for his technical retirement from employment at United Laboratories, Inc. (Unilab) in A.D. He invested in a desktop computer with a book on Lotus 1-2-3. He gave the book to me and said: "Takeng, pag-aralan mo 'yan at tulungan mo ako sa negosyo." (translation: "Son, study this and help me with the business.") At that time, I just resigned from my job as a well-salaried economic researcher at NEDA (now the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) to pursue higher studies. Also, my sister was searching for a better-paying job with more benefits than her radio-broadcasting writing job at DZRT, a Philippine local radio station, and our youngest brother was still in grade 6 at Lourdes School Mandaluyong (LSM), but was aiming to be accelerated and be exempted from grade 7.

I did what my father instructed me to do.

And the rest is family business history. The business took off as a microfinancing service, providing credit access to my father's friends, relatives, and co-employees. This business provided his contacts at United Laboratories, Inc. (Unilab), Greenfield Development Corporation (GDC), EDSA Central Shopping Terminal, Dynavision Development & Investment Corporation (DDIC), and PP&P Insurance Underwriters Agency, Inc. (PP&P), with access to retail consumer goods and groceries at Uniwide, Isetann, Landmark, and at SM Stores and Supermarkets (SM). The microfinance business was simple, practical, and DIY. It helped our family business thrive and profit in the politically, economically, and socially unstable times of the People Power Revolution years.

From that simple business venture with a small PC running on DOS and using Lotus 1-2-3 software, our family continued to conserve resources and preserve the classical values our father and our mother instilled in us till the year . Conservation and preservation are necessary for business to be resilient during hard times. Add this simplicity and self-sufficiency to any Philippine MSME, and it will profit for both the short-term and the long-term.

It is in this historical, family "MSME" context that this Blog is based. Rosauro's Legacy Archive is rooted in Rosauro’s desire to serve others with financial literacy and discipline.
